Another in my series of retro airports in Papua New Guinea. This scenery depicts Finschhafen in 1970 done from memory and a couple of photos I took at the time.
Finschhafen AYFI is still operational
Finschhafen was built in late 1943 with a 6,000' (1,828 metre) runway. The surrounding infrastructure became a massive forward base including Dregerhafen (Navy) and adjacent army camps.
I spent a short time in Finsch in the early 50s and saw lines of B24s and P38s among others being broken up for scrap and fed into smelters by contracted metal merchants. A lot of wartime equipment was simply dumped bulldozed into the ground adjacent to the base and has now been claimed by the jungle.
During my visit in 1970 the RAAF were staging training operations out of Finsch UH1 Hughies so i have included a couple for effect.
NOTE: This scenery would not be possible without the wonderful libraries created by:
colinj Object library and windy things by trfsto (downloads available here at flightsin.to) I thank them for helping my scenery come to life.
I sincerely hope you enjoy Finschhafen
