Piper’s family tree dates back 30 million years ago based on fossil evidence! Opportunistic foragers and pelicans not only eat fish, but also prey on crustaceans, amphibians, turtles, and other birds. And contrary to popular belief, they do not store fish in their pouches. Instead, they use their pouch to catch food and then proceed to tip it back to drain water and swallow immediately. Unfortunately, because of climate change and humans using the wetlands they live in, some populations of pelicans are declining.
