The first week of March annually marks the beginning of the Iditarod sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome Alaska. In 2023 the race took the "Southern" route which passes through Shageluk. (See map)
Shageluk is checkpoint #12 of 23 on the way to Nome. To learn more about the Iditarod, it's airports, and the race itself, go to the Iditarod.com website.
Population 139 -- The name is an Ingalik Indian name meaning “village of the dog people,” and when the Iditarod hits town, that is especially true. The checkpoint is in the community hall. Shageluk is an Athabascan Indian village first reported as “Tie’goschitno” in 1850 by Lt. Zagoskin of the Russian Navy. A post office was established in 1924. Residents of Shageluk moved in 1966 from a flood-prone location to a higher site two miles southeast. The BIA constructed 20 homes and a school at the new site. The city was incorporated in 1970. Shageluk is a Deg Hit’an Athabascan community that relies on subsistence activities.
