    Diamond eDA62 (DA62 Electric) - Image 1

    Description

    The future is now!

After creating my first fully electric aircraft in the sim that happened to be based on GotFriends Optica, I decided to retrofit the standard Diamond DA62.  Copyright problems aside, in my opinion, this aircraft suits even more for such an overhaul.

    Powerplant

Let's swap Austro AE330 engines for 2x 200 kW (268 hp) electric motors, such as Magnax AXF275 (1000 Nm peak torque, 4000 RPM max, 125 lbs dry weight with an invertor and a 2:1 final gear). When throttle is set to zero, the regeneration mode is activated. In this mode the battery is recharged at about 13 kW power, so that helps during the descent and on flinal, acting as an efficient speedbrake. High torque is available even on lowest RPMs and no power degradation with altitude as expected. You can even cruise as low as at 20-25% engine power.

The aircraft is supplied with two high-voltage 800V 500Ah futuristic solid-state batteries (1 kWh/kg), so total capacity reaches 750 kWh. Batteries could be switched on and off with former engine master switches. The batteries add roughly 1650 lbs to the empty weight of the aircraft which is now 4363 lbs. Max takeoff weight has been left unchanged. The engine props were switched to the modern model and tweaked a little.

    Flight model

Nothing special except for the empty weight and empty weight MOI, flaps coefficient increased a little.

    Performance

    Practical ceiling: 40000 feet

Max speed: ~300 KTAS @ 40000 feet on full power (400 kW)

Max range: 800-1283 nm at low altitudes and 70-100 kW

Max endurance: 7-10 hours at low altitudes and 70-100 kW

    Normal cruise: 230 KTAS @ 300 kW @ 25000 feet, 520 nm range

Rate of climb: ~1800-2000 feet/min at Vy speed (95 KIAS) on full power

    Stall speed: 64 knots

    Systems

Vanilla DA62 ECUs were made operable. When ECU switches are activated, the props are governed in "constant blade AoA" mode which performs a lot better than a constant speed mode in climb. The propellers are constantly held at 0.5 degree angle of attack and this results in constant high thrust efficiency. Thus the engine response is made more linear in wider range of power settings and  RPMs. At low power settings this mode allows the plane cruise at unusually low RPMs like 1000-1300. The engines at "idle" setting (1%, 4kW) produce near-zero thrust at 500 RPM and make an efficient glider.  In climb the ECU conversely lets propellers spin faster than normal with lower pitch, the constraint on blade tips mach number (0.92) is applied when necessary.

Engine displays for G1000 were adjusted for electric engines and systems. De-ice system, air conditioning and pressurization systems are simulated as fully electrical with dynamical electrical loads.

    Sounds

Sounds from the electric glider DG1001E were adapted for the airplane.

    Livery

A gorgeous default livery was made by Crispy136 based on a real-life prototype https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-__ap7f7ZHY.

    Have fun!

Doesn't work. And I have no mod installed.

Hi, let's wait for the new sim and I will update the mod for it. I'm exhausted of searching what may be wrong. It's been a year and the thing just lets me down. I don't really know, sometimes it loads okay, but the next time it crashes with no logs or error codes. This is really frustrating.

The only thing that looks electric is the livery. The sound, gauges and every behaviour is exactly as Austro Engine basic variant. Or... am I missing something? I select the DA62 and then in liveries I select the eDA62 Electric Livery...

That seems like another mod on DA-62 has a conflict

A little update for all who experience crashes: I thoroughly reassembled the mod file by file and found no critical errors. But that time I just renamed the top folder to asobo-aircraft-eda62. Probably it is caused by some obscure MSFS aircraft data caching mechanism. Before this whole business the mod refused to load absolutely. Hope that helps somebody.

Possibly texture related, trying to figure it out. EDA40 runs okay. Now I experience CTDs quite often and 100% when loading the first flight.

UPD: deleting cockpit.cfg works, at least for now

Hello, I have a RTD with the version 1.0.4 the 1.0.0 runs good

Please comment on the matter of continuing/discontinuing CTDs

We love this eDA62. Departed KSFO heading south, climbed to 30,000 feet, set NXI Direct To STRGHT for a nice VPTH descent, and landed using the Visual Runway 30 approach to KOAK. All the instruments and the flight worked perfectly.

The only problem I had was after exiting by turning off the red electric master switch in the cockpit, I always get a CTD a few seconds after clicking the (return to) Main Menu button. I had the same issue with 1.0.3 and 1.0.4.

    Hi Smart_Rookie,
Since the last update, the software only crashes when loading the flight. With version 1.03 there are no such problems.

Okay, got it. Well maybe I will have to reassemble the mod file by file to find the culprit, I don't know at the moment and now I'm having crashes with the default G1000... Shame!

Hi, try to delete the older version and reinstall again.

When I installed this it over wrote the default da62. Is that still the case or did you extend the model now?
    s

Yes, this is as intended, just to not include all the other assets of DA62 in the mod.

UPD: I confirm time to time, a random crash may happen while loading. Too bad the cause is not obvious, gonna fix it anyway

UPD2: JS sometimes parses commentaries in the code incorrectly, I've had that one, further investigation required

    1. Switched back to a standard G1000 2. Fixed LODs in DA62.xml Stability might be better, tested 10 flight loads in a row with no CTDs.
