    UNKL - Krasnoyarsk Airport + UNKM - Cheremshanka Airport 2024 - Image 1

    Description

UNKL - Airport Krasnoyarsk (ex Yemelyanovo) - International Airport (Russian: Международный аэропорт Красноярск) (IATA: KJA, ICAO: UNKL), is a major airport in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, 27 kilometres (17 mi) northwest of Krasnoyarsk.

Construction of the airport started in 1970. It opened for operations in 1980. By 2006, the old runway coating had been replaced by asphalt-concrete layer with reinforced polymeric netting. In November 2017, the general director of the airport has announced that the airport will now be called Krasnoyarsk-International, instead of Krasnoyarsk-Yemelyanovo. It is unknown if the airport has as yet been officially renamed.

Krasnoyarsk Yemelyanovo's location is an unusual case, as the airfield is located right next to a smaller airfield, Cheremshanka. The reason this is unusual and slightly problematic is that since Cheremshanka is right next to the airfield, it can be easily confused as being Yemelyanovo, and what adds to the location issue is the fact that both airfields share their runway bearings - 11/29 - with each other. This, as a result, makes the two airports look like one, which is especially problematic as the only way to distinguish the two is the runway lengths - Cheremshanka has a shorter runway than Yemelyanovo - and the fact that no taxiway connects the two airfields.

At present, the airport provides a full array of passenger handling services in all three terminals, including VIP services, a business lounge, baby/parent room, ATMs, shops, cafés, bars, a drugstore and a post office. Runway 29 is certified for ILS Category II operations. The runway condition, the facilities and the technology of aircraft handling allows the airport to service more than 50 types of passenger and freighter aircraft, up to and including the Boeing 777, Boeing 767, Boeing 747, Airbus A330 family, McDonnell Douglas MD-11, Antonov An-124 and others.

In November 2015, construction of a new passenger terminal began. In 2016, Yemelyanovo was included in the list of airports of federal significance. In November 2017, the airport management announced their desire to officially rename it to Krasnoyarsk Airport. On December 26, 2017, the new passenger terminal was opened in anticipation of the 2019 XXIX Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk. Initially, the terminal served only domestic flights (the old one continued to accept international flights), on February 19, 2019, it was opened for international flights. The old international airlines terminal was mothballed, and the domestic airlines terminal was reconstructed and turned into a business terminal. In January 2018, a new 63-meter-high command and control center (KDP) was opened at the airport, which became the tallest in Russia.

In March 2019, Yemelyanovo Airport was officially renamed Krasnoyarsk Airport. As a result of the Great Names of Russia competition in 2019, the airport was named after the opera singer Dmitry Alexandrovich Khvorostovsky (1962-2017), who was born in Krasnoyarsk. In late March 2019, the airport signed an agreement to establish an Aeroflot hub in 2020, but the launch was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening ceremony was held on May 31, 2021. In September 2021, the grand opening of the 2,691-meter-long taxiway took place. This allowed for a twofold increase in the number of takeoff and landing operations per hour, from 12 to 24. In October 2024, engineering and geodetic surveys were initiated to develop a project for the reconstruction of the runway.

UNKM - Krasnoyarsk Cheremshanka Airport (Russian: Красноярский аэропорт Черемшанка) (ICAO: UNKM) is a domestic airport in the Krasnoyarsk Krai. Since 1982 it is also the base of a helicopter detachment of civil defense, featuring the Mil Mi-6 and Mil Mi-8 aircraft. Besides civil defense and military use, the airfield is used for civilian passenger traffic flights of Antonov An-24 and Antonov An-26 aircraft. It is the hub of KrasAvia airline.

On 19 December 2011, a fire broke out at the Cheremshanka airport which destroyed the terminal building and the air traffic control tower. No injuries were reported. The reason for the fire is under investigation. About 100 fire fighters and 38 vehicles managed to extinguish the fire about four hours after the alert. No injuries occurred, no passengers were in the terminal building (capacity for 500 passengers) when the fire broke out.

In 2011–2018, passengers were served at a temporary terminal, which was made from the previous cargo terminal. The destroyed terminal was reconstructed after the fire and enlarged, to allow accepting 30 flights on a daily basis. The new passenger terminal was open in June 2018. The terminal serves regional flights only.
