What is it?

Better Bravo Lights (BBL) aims to be a ‘better’ replacement for the Aerosoft Honeycomb Bravo Throttle lights tool (aka the “AFC bridge”).  It is completely standalone and does not require the original Honeycomb Bravo lights driver.

BBL provides a number of significant improvements over the original Aerosoft/Honeycomb Bravo Lights driver:

  • It supports different configurations for different aircraft; this is critical because oil pressures, fuel pressures and battery voltages vary wildly from aircraft to aircraft.
  • Lights respond immediately, not just after a second or two. This is vitally important for responsive autopilot buttons.
  • It comes with a complete set of configurations for all of the aircraft that come with MSFS.
  • It supports both A: variables and L: variables. Putting the technojargon to one side, if you want to make the MASTER WARNING and MASTER CAUTION lights work, you need a tool that can read L: variables from MSFS. AFC Bridge doesn’t support L: variables.

NOTE: THIS TOOL IS CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT AND IN BETA STATUS!

I just installed and was pleased to see that it worked perfectly, replacing the Honeycomb software. I loaded the PMDG 737 and it seemed to work perfectly. So I switched to the DA62 and it didn't work. I had to exit the sim completely and on reloading the sim, the DA62 then worked. So changing planes seems to lose your program. I will continue testing.

THIS IS A VERY IMPRESSIVE ADDITION. All my planes show more and better lights with instant response. Thank you very much!

I believe today's World Update IX broke the addon. My lights were working fine last night, updated the game today and no lights. Uninstalled and reinstalled via the .bat files. Redownloaded the release and attempted to install again to no avail.

Neither the Install or Uninstall batch files are working for version .0.8.0. I've had no trouble with any previous versions. Basically when I click on Install the command prompt with the install message doesn't open. I've tried downloading from here and directly from GitHub. Neither zip file allows me to install. I haven't tried uninstalling the BBL lvar module folder in the MSFS packages. Version 7 is responding as normal.

Any troubleshooting tips? Could something be cached from a previous version?

Yeah, I’m having an issue with this. I have 0.7.0 installed, works fine. I hit install.bat for this version and it still loads up 0.7.0 with the sim. Tried uninstall.bat, then install.bat again to see if that would sort it, but nope.

The `.bat` files haven't changed in 0.8.0. They both just call the .exe to tell it to run its install/uninstall logic.

image

RoystonS 7 day(s) ago

  • Répondre

For those of you where the installation is failing, can you tell me the path you're running from? The installation code hasn't changed in 0.8.0.

(I have just spotted an error where it'll probably fail if you have spaces in the path name, which is a bit of a schoolboy error, but that problem was there in all previous versions. I'll ship a quick fix for that. The .bat files are going away soon and will be replaced with a first-class installer.)

image

RoystonS 7 day(s) ago

  • Répondre

I lied. 😞 The installation script did change in 0.8.0 after somebody reported a problem when they ran the installation as administrator (which isn't necessary). Fixing that required making the path explicit, but I screwed that up so that an installation from a path with spaces in it no longer worked. That's an embarrassingly stupid schoolboy error and I should know better - apologies!

I've just released 0.8.1 which fixes the install.bat + uninstall.bat scripts. You don't need to uninstall an old version: just install the new version. It also includes more PMDG 737 configuration and new features in the variables list.

Apologies again - thanks for letting me know about the problem!

Thanks for the update, I'm glad to hear you are working on it, I'm really grateful for your work, it makes using the Bravo so much better. I was able to purchase the plane before the store went down and have been experimenting a bit, but also getting constant CTD if I try to use the Variable List. Lmk if I can help. Thank you!

image

RoystonS 10 day(s) ago

  • Répondre

Thanks. Yes, I got some CTDs earlier off the variable list. There seems to be an issue with reading very large numbers of A: variables. If you clear out the KnownSimVars.csv file it'll use only L: variables, which are completely stable (and more interesting for the PMDG 737!). It's definitely an experimental UI right now, hence all the disclaimers! 😉

I'm collecting bits of configuration here:

https://github.com/RoystonS/BetterBravoLights/issues/39

So far I have all the autopilot lights and the doors figured out. The rest of the lights are proving a little elusive.

When you unpack the .zip file you downloaded, the Config.ini file is directly in that folder.

Documentation is here:

If BetterBravoLights is running it'll put a lightbulb icon in the system tray.

Ok, so you're seeing the splash screen when the program starts up. That's a good sign, as it means the program is able to run. After it has shown that splash screen for a few seconds the program will shift into the background and it'll put a lightbulb icon in the system tray so that you can still interact with it. Something has gone very wrong if that system tray icon isn't there. I've not heard of that before.

So, can I ask: have you checked your system tray's overflow menu? Windows might not show all the system tray icons if you have more than a couple of them, and will move some of them into a separate dropdown. (I have 25 system tray icons in the overflow menu on my computer.)

I am having the same issue as the previous posters. -It has worked fine for about 50 hours ofgameplay, but now it only works if I reinstall before starting flightsim. I have to do it every time. This also goes for the original software from aerosoft. Maybe something weird with the latest sim update?

Could you try rerunning the installer? Many other tools - when they're installing - break or corrupt the file that MSFS uses to decide what programs to run when it starts up, so something else may well have broken the startup. (That will break both BBL and the Aerosoft tools and most other things that need to run on startup.)

I've actually had to write code that detects and attempts to fix the corruption. Running the installer will trigger that.

image

renzorx 14 day(s) ago

  • Répondre

It made no difference. It's still totally random if it works or not when loading up the game. Same issue with the original software from Aerosoft as well. I have no clue what the issue could be.

image

RoystonS 12 day(s) ago

  • Répondre

Would you mind raising an issue on GitHub so I can look into it in more detail?

https://github.com/RoystonS/BetterBravoLights/issues/new/choose

It would be extremely helpful to see the contents of your `exe.xml` file, which is at

USER/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft Flight Simulator

if you have the Steam MSFS

or

USER/AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

if you have the Windows Store MSFS

That exe.xml file controls the program which MSFS runs at startup, and if something has corrupted it (and some software out there is going round accidentally corrupting it), it'll break.

The other possibility is that BBL isn't exiting properly so then doesn't start up again properly, but as you're saying you're seeing the same issue with the Aerosoft software I'd really like to see your exe.xml file.

image

renzorx 11 day(s) ago

  • Répondre

Had an issue with my pc today and lost all my files. Will have to reinstall everything and knowing microsoft download speeds it will take probably 2 days to reinstall MSFS. If a clean install doesn't fix the issue I've been having, I'll upload the file as you requested.

I've just released BBL v0.8.0. Whilst it doesn't - and can't - stop other installers from breaking the file that controls which programs MSFS starts up, manually running BBL will now tell you whether something has broken the startup, and offer fix suggestions.

Just to confirm the program isn't shutting down when I exit the sim and it has to be manually quit. If you don't do this the next time you open FS2020 the lights won't work unless you manually quit and re-open the mod.

Daft question also, but how do I edit the parameters? DO I need spad.next or something? The Low Volts light on the JF PA28 series is not configured correctly.

Cheers, & thanks for a must-have mod!

Heya. No, spad.net isn't required. BBL is completely standalone.

Full configuration documentation is available here:

https://roystons.github.io/BetterBravoLights/configuration.html

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the shutdown; perhaps MS have broken something in the latest update. BBL will automatically exit if MSFS tells us that the sim is exiting and also automatically exits if the sim stops responding.

Hiya. I've just released BBL v0.8.0. In that I've rewritten the logic used to detect when MSFS has exited, as the MSFS API isn't reliable, as you've found. It should now exit much more reliably.

It doesn't end when you exit the sim so you have to manually do it. If you don't, and re-open the sim without having shut down your PC first, then the lights don't work. You are still able to quit the program and run the .exe with the sim open though.

That's strange. If you've installed other tools recently it's quite possible that once of those has broken the file that MSFS uses to start programs up. Try rerunning the BetterBravoLights install and it'll ensure that file is correct, or tell you about the problem.

I found an issue related to sim world map. If i install Better Bravo light it is not possible to insert a third point between an A -B route. In other words, i make a flight plan from an A airport to B airport and the sim shows the lines that connect the two airport. But if i want to insert a POI between the A-B route it is not possible because the voice menu ADD that appears when you click on a POI is not clickable. I hope you can understand what i am saying. Let me know otherwise. If i uninstall the Better Bravo Light the problem disappear.

Heya. I'm not all that familiar with the FBW A32NX, but would be happy to help you figure out a better configuration for the autopilot settings for that aircraft.

FBW document their state variables here, and there seem to be a fair few for their autopilot:

https://github.com/flybywiresim/a32nx/blob/master/docs/a320-simvars.md#autopilot-system

I've not been able to try it yet, but an entry such as

[Aircraft.FlyByWire_A320_NEO]

HDG = L:A32NX_FCU_HDG_MANAGED_DASHES == 1

added to your `Config.ini` file looks like it would do something different with the HDG light in managed heading mode. (You can make that edit even in the middle of flight: you don't need to restart anything.)

image

Bernhard60 2 month(s) ago

  • Répondre

Thanks, I did it (and some other lines, I know the FBW document), but it didn´t work.

Strange: HDG + VS are always illuminated, and all other are allways dark.

I use a lot of FBW variables with FCUIPC7, but I don´t find the right one for BBL.

https://docs.flybywiresim.com/pilots-corner/a32nx-briefing/a32nx_api

But I don´t give up, one day I´ll find the variable.

Thanks works fine now, I hardly dare to say it, but it was my mistake: typo in the command line

I like the new split config setup which makes a lot of sense. Would it be good to have the Config.ini with the user settings elsewhere (perhaps BBLSettings subfolder in users default documents folder?), rather than in the BBL folder? There's a good chance users will inadvertantly overwrite this when installing updates which would defeat the purpose of having this config.ini carried over between updates.

It's a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand the Config.ini file needs to be in a very obvious place so that users can edit it, but ideally, as you say, it wouldn't be something that gets overwritten with a new installation.

With the split config file we're certainly heading to a situation where it's easier to carry your config over: previously you had to manually reapply your changes to an increasingly-large config file that was part of the product. Not very maintainable.

So yes, do I put the config file somewhere that _isn't_ part of the unpacked zip (which means that if you decide to stop using BBL we'll leave a config file around; I always find that a bit rude) or rely upon people to copy it from one installation to another? I think I'm with you on probably favouring the former...

Interesting! With the v0.7.0 release I changed the exit logic to simplify it.

Before v0.7.0 the logic was:

* If BBL is launched manually, only exit when BBL is manually exited

* If BBL is launched by the sim, exit when the sim exits

As of v0.7.0 it's now:

* Exit when the sim exits, whether launched manually or not

So it _should_ be exiting with the sim. Are you exiting the sim 'cleanly' or hitting ALT-F4? (For me BBL exits in both those cases.)

I have always exited using the Quit to Desktop option. I tested a couple times and BBL closed correctly today. So now I'm confused ha. But I will continue to monitor and report if it hangs up again. Thanks for your response.

FS2 Crew seems to be a payware module. I don't have it right now, so if you could provide some info on how it conflicts, I'd like to try to diagnose the issue. BBL should be completely independent of anything else so I'm a little lost as to what sort of conflict could occur.

FS2Crew have an app that auto loads as FS2020 loads, 'FS2CrewCommandCente', this has to remain open for FS2Crew FWB and pushback express to work.

As soon as I installed better bravo lights FS2 Crew threw an error saying the WASM module was corrupt. I immediately uninstalled Better bravo lights and the FS2crew error was resolved. so I'm assuming thats what caused the conflict?

Interesting. So it's the FS2Crew command centre app that's complaining about a corrupt WASM?

I can see some entries on the FS2Crew troubleshooting page about a WASM error, and also about a log file: https://fs2crew.com/fs2crew-command-center-troubleshooting/

Are there any more details accompanying the 'Corrupt WASM' message? (Any error codes might be helpful) and is there anything in the log file from around that time?

First-class installer
🚀 In Progress

Estimation de 27 May 2022 » Final planned rejig of the installation process of BBL. Instead of unpacking a zip and running `install.bat` / `uninstall.bat` we'll instead have a proper installer. This will make some things much easier: 1) Users won't have to remember to keep the unpacked zip around. We've had some users run the install, trash the unpacked zip and then wonder why BBL isn't starting up. With a real installer BBL will be installed somewhere safe. 2) With a proper install of BBL we can separate out the user-edited Config.ini file from the installed software. Users won't need to copy their Config.ini files between versions: they can just install the new version and their existing Config.ini will be picked up automatically.

Estimation de 01 Jun 2022 » Add an aircraft 'inheritance' feature. Right now if there is a minor variant of an existing aircraft (e.g. the JD GTN750 series), they require copying all the existing configuration to work properly. It would be helpful to be able to say "Aircraft X behaves like Aircraft Y" using some sort of aliasing mechanism, but it would be more flexible to support an inheritance feature. That way we could say "Aircraft X behaves like Aircraft Y but also adds in facilities from Z". That would allow us to say "I have an aircraft that behaves like a Cessna 172 but picks up autopilot mappings for a GTN750".
Warn about unconfigured aircraft
🕛 Planned

Estimation de 01 Jun 2022 » When a user starts a flight with an aircraft that BBL doesn't know anything about, it's not obvious that BBL is having to resort to an 'unconfigured' defaults state, so they don't know what to expect from the lighting configuration. It would be useful if we could see an unobtrusive message _in the sim_ that warns that a default configuration is being used. This is surprisingly hard to achieve because MSFS doesn't provide any standard text display APIs any more.

Improve configurations for unconfigured aircraft
Backlog

Estimation de 01 Jun 2022 » It's not hard to improve on the experience that the default Aerosoft Bravo drivers produce, which is a single fixed configuration for all aircraft. We've certainly done that. But the configuration we default to when faced with an unconfigured aircraft could probably be improved. Assuming it's 12V or 24V is bound to lead to problems, so we could either remove the voltage check from the default, or possibly investigate sensing the range of voltages seen and guessing whether we're 12V or 24V. Suggestions welcome!

  • Version 0.8.1 May 14, 2022

    Bugs fixes:
    * Fixed an error in the install +uninstall scripts which made installations from paths with spaces in fail. Schoolboy mistake - apologies!

    Features:
    * PMDG 737 built-in configuration: more settings (Master Caution, Low Fuel Pressure, Anti Ice, Starter Engaged, APU, Low Hyd Pressure, improved Engine Fire light).
    * Variables list: now shows an animated highlight when a variable changes, and supported reducing the font size. It's now much easier to locate a changing variable in a huge list of lvars.

  • Version 0.8.0 May 12, 2022

    * BBL now uses its own logic to detect when MSFS has exited, rather than relying on the MSFS API. It should now exit much more reliably after MSFS ends.
    * BBL now warns if some other program has corrupted the MSFS startup configuration, preventing BBL (and other applications from automatically starting up with MSFS).
    * Updated experimental variables list for SU9

    New built-in configurations:
    * PMDG 737: Add autopilot, Engine Fire and Door settings
    * FBW A32NX: improve MasterEnable; invert AntiIce logic; add more autopilot entries. Enormous thanks to @BJ1960 and @A320AutoPilot for contributing to those!

  • Version 0.7.0 February 19, 2022

    A significant update to BetterBravoLights.

    - Split configuration file means that you can keep your own configuration separate to the configuration that BetterBravoLights itself ships with
    - Built-in configurations for several new aircraft
    - New 'MasterEnable' configuration option which makes it easier to disable all lights if, say, the avionics or battery is off
    - New bitwise operators in expressions
    - New (prototype) 'variable list' user interface

The complete changelog is available here:
    https://github.com/RoystonS/BetterBravoLights/releases/tag/v0.7.0

  • Version 0.6.0 November 05, 2021

This is a hugely significant release which takes us quite a way towards v1.0.

Detailed release notes are available here: https://github.com/RoystonS/BetterBravoLights/releases/tag/v0.6.0

    - BetterBravoLights now comes with its own WASM module for reading lvars, with several significant benefits:
    - FSUIPC is no longer needed
    - Better error handling for missing `L:` variables
    - Huge simplification of distribution zip
    - The top-level distribution directory contains far fewer files, enabling you to find the ones you actually care about, specifically `install.bat`, `uninstall.bat` and `Config.ini`.
    - `AND` and `OR` now "short-circuit", so we can write expressions able to ignore missing variables
    - significant improvement in efficiency for detecting `A:` variable changes
    - corrected unsubscribe of `A:` variables
    - lights are now disabled when in the simulator main menu

    New aircraft configuration:
    - [Grumman Goose](https://flightsim.to/file/19718/grumman-goose-g21a-redux-ii) oil + pressure lights

Thanks to @xDalle for diagnostic and fault-finding help!

  • Version 0.5.1 October 23, 2021

    - Added specific configuration for the JustFlight Hawk T1; this replicates the relevant CWP lights onto your Bravo, so even the indicator light test works. Note that this configuration makes *heavy* use of L: variables, so please make sure you have them working.

  • Version 0.5.0 October 17, 2021

    - major improvements to FBW A32NX configuration (thanks to @jcabanascachi for lots of help with that!); specifically, changes to definitions for the AUTO PILOT, StarterEngaged, APU, ParkingBrake and AntiIce lights.
    - minor improvements to the stock A320 configuration
    - new 'Invert' configuration option which makes it easy to invert the logic for specified lights (thanks to @dsweingard for the initial idea!)
    - added logical `NOT` operator (e.g. you can now write `X AND NOT (Y OR Z)`)
    - added unary minus (e.g. `-3`)

    Internal changes:
    - split out USB + expression logic into a separate shared assembly
    - added separate prototype Bravo Lights tool for *DCS*. It's working and contains hard-coded expressions for the A-10C. Note: requires DCS-BIOS

Do you have an opinion on how the 'Anti Ice' annunciator should work? The configuration for most planes right now is that the light is lit if NO pitot/anti-ice is enabled. This seems rather simplistic and unhelpful. What _should_ it do? There's some discussion here: https://github.com/RoystonS/BetterBravoLights/issues/14 - please do chip in or raise a new issue if you have some insight!

Does this work with all aircraft?

Better Bravo Lights (BBL) works by reading the state of the simulator and deciding which lights to illuminate on your Bravo as a result.

Some lights, such as 'Parking Brake' are easy: the simulator has a built-in piece of state which tells us whether the brake is on, and we turn the 'Parking Brake' light on or off based on that.

Other lights, such as 'Low Oil Pressure' are harder: we need to read the oil pressure from the simulator and decide whether that's 'low' or not. An oil pressure of 50psi would be low for some aircraft, and fine for others, however, and the simulator doesn't tell us what's 'low' for an aircraft.  This means we need to know, outside of the simulator, the 'low' value for each and every individual aircraft.

To complicate matters further, some third party aircraft don't use the standard simulator state, so we need to read oil pressure in a completely different way.

The same goes for low fuel pressure, low volts, and all the other lights.

So, to answer the question:

BBL is capable of supporting any aircraft but won't necessarily know how to map each light to the simulator state unless there's specific configuration for it for that aircraft. BBL comes with configuration for lots of aircraft, built-in, but if you're using an uncommon or new aircraft there may not be configuration for it. Some lights such as autopilot and parking brake lights may work without specific configuration but others won't.

There's a lot of documentation available to help you figure out the configuration for a new aircraft, and you can then share that configuration with others.
