Land of maritime and fishing tradition, of deep religious beliefs, marked by the Igreja Matriz, where its main portico of great decorative richness stands out, it has always been subject to the misfortunes of toil and the misfortunes of the sea. Today, alongside artisanal fishing, catering, trade and tourism are the main economic activities. Alvor is known for its beaches and its fishing village by the mouth of the river. Although it is customary to hear visitors or outsiders call the village "O Alvor", the designation "O Alvor" refers to the river with the same name. For someone to refer to Alvor, they simply have to indicate Alvor or Alvor village. Its main industry is tourism. There is an aerodrome at Alvor (Montes de Alvor/Penina), often known as (PTM)/Portimão.
