Queenstown Airport (NZQN) RNP Procedures - Image 1

    Description

It's no need to tell how famous this airport is, but only RNAV-Y 05 approach is present if you fly IFR in the flight planner (it becomes none after SU8). When I toggle waypoint display, there are a lot of waypoints defined around the airport so I'm curious for the availability of other instrument approaches, and I found the others in New Zealand AIP.

I added these 4 instrument approach procedures in this addon:

    • RNAV(RNP)-Z 05
    • RNAV(RNP)-Z 23

    and these 6 RNAV(RNP)SIDs:

    • ANPOV 3A 05
    • ANPOV 3B 23
    • DOVMA 2A 05
    • IPNOR 3A 05
    • IPNOR 3B 23
    • REDOL 1B 23

The procedures for RNAV(RNP)-Y and RNAV(RNP)-Z are pretty similar with each other, with only some minor differences in minimum and missed approach profile so I didn't code both of them. Currently the sim couldn't distinguish between RNAV(RNP) and RNAV(GNSS) approaches (just like all the ILS are displayed as CATIII in the sim), for those aircraft which are not capable of performing RNP-AR approaches, only RNAV(GNSS)-F or RNAV(GNSS)-H procedures should be used, but they are not allowed to perform at night as there are hilly terrains around the airport. Please read the approach chart from New Zealand AIP for the "8" shaped final circling procedures for these 2 approaches. Also it is a little bit tricky for the ascend profile of the SIDs, you are recommended to read the corresponding charts to understand all the altitude constraints along the ascend route.

For DOVMA 2A and REDOL 1B departures, as the climbing speed is as slow as 145KIAS, use Flaps 2 for A320, or Flaps 15 for 737.

This addon should have no conflicts with other Queenstown Airport mods, execpt that these additional IFR approaches are also coded. Of course you don't need this addon if it is the case. This addon is also not needed if you are subscribing 3rd party navdata like Navigraph.

Thanks for doing these IFR approaches. I'm still learning IFR and the last time I flew IFR in Queenstown ATC tried to send me into a mountain side.

Hi, could you also add the departure procedures too if you haven't already please?

    Thanks!

Yes, you may refer to the description section, 6 SIDs are included

Hi, in reality RNAV Y and Z approaches are only flown by authorised operators. RNAV Y by Air New Zealand (jets), Jetstar, QANTAS and Virgin Australia; the RNAV Z is only flown by Air New Zealand AT76. Likewise, the ATRs will only fly the REDOL or DOVMA departures, domestic RNP-AR jets will fly the ANPOV departures and international RNP-AR jets the IPNOR departures

Thanks for all your efforts. Very useful for me.

Would be WONDERFUL if someone could do this for Ardmore (NZAR). I'm happy to provide the plates (or atleast the URL's for them) if anyone needed that to do the coding.

I looked up the terminal waypoints around NZAR in flight planner and compared with the IFR procedures published in the AIP of NZ, some of them are missing but the AIP of NZ doesn't provide the coordinates of terminal waypoints (while most countries will provide that) so it is not that feasible to code the procedures. The case of Queenstown is different, all the waypoints are built-in but the associated RNAV approaches are missed.

Thanks for your quick response. I don't know how to do the coding to build a SID or an RNAV, but I think I could out the coordinates for all the points and send them to you, if that would help?

Thanks :-) That has all the standard 5-letter waypoints, but doesn't include the points specific to the RNAV procedure. eg Ardmore (NZAR) 21R approach is ORERE-EMTUB-AR401 then AR572-AR683-SY on the missed approach. I haven't been able to find where the coordinates for these "AR" specific waypoints are listed. I could get a pretty close approximation, by pinpointing them on my EFB and extracting the resultant coordinates... but that still leaves me with the issue of not knowing where to start to construct an RNAV on MSFS. Cheers

Many thanks for this. NZQN is my "go to" airport in NZ - and I've spent a lot of time lately, messing with RNAV approaches - so this has come at a good time!
