    Description

    Popham, UK - hand-crafted airport

Another airport crafted from scratch. It mostly uses stock objects but I have created a custom model for the green hangars.
    I hope you enjoy it!

    Info:

Popham Airfield (ICAO: EGHP) is an unlicensed airfield located 6 NM (11 km; 6.9 mi) south west of Basingstoke in Hampshire, UK. It lies alongside the A303 road.

The airfield has two grass runways, designated 08/26 and 03/21. Light aircraft maintenance facilities, aircraft hire and flight training on microlight and light aircraft is available from AirBourne Aviation Ltd.

Popham Airfield runs many different events over the year, including the Microlight trade fair in May, the annual Motorcycle Mega Meet & Vintage Aircraft Fly-in in August and the New Year's Day Fly-in.

    Includes:

    • Completely overhauled airport from scratch
    • Added taxiways as close to aerial footage as possible
    • Runway terraforming to match the hill in real-life (I've never been there so I've made a best effort based on photos)
    • Custom model for green hangars
    • Lots of other hand placed stock scenery buildings and objects.
    • Ground ATC
    • Removed 8 storey high autogen building on 26 approach
    • Replaced petrol station and local yard with stock buildings and containers

    Install:

Extract the "gobby-popham" folder to your /Community/ folder.

    Note:

    • The water tower at the end of runway 26 isn't very close to real-life, but its the closest i could find in the stock object library.
    • I have not included all the colour variations of the green hangars.

Thank you so much for this. The airfield looks great. Such a shame that ASOBO do not allow the grass to be cut shorter. Makes taxiing on grass strips tricky. If you ever do an update, +1 for higher grain silos to the west as already requested.

I have to say Gobby - fantastic work on the BBD version of Popham. It's outstanding. Well done and much kudos - all that time spent at the end of 23 has paid off!

Yes, I second that. Superb job on the BBD version and worth every penny.

Hey Gobby, I saw Gobby55 at Popham today. Wondered if that was you testing an update? Hint, hint ;)

I expect it means you can expect a payware version.

Yes, maybe from Burning Blue Design???

No, from Gobby - he's started putting out his airfields as Payware in Market Place. Done Blackbushe so far. If he does a decent job on Popham - correct runway slope (not hillock in the middle of 26) water towers, all hangars, decent club house and the silos in the distance I might consider it.

Oh, my mistake, I thought I saw something online that appeared to link Gobby with Burning Blue Design. Yes, if he did a good job on Popham I'd buy it. Failing that, maybe Orbx will do it like they did for FSX.
    W

Yep, the ORBX FSX/ P3D one was pretty good wasn't it? - even had the main gates with the Spitfire iron railings design. There's a few more hangars round the back of the trees that have gone up since those days. I wish the guy who's done Compton Abbas so brilliantly would take a look at old Poppers.

Yes, what he's done with Compton Abbas is superb. Would love to see what he could do with Popham.

Just to clear things up. Yes I am now developing for Burning Blue Design, having worked on Farnborough for the past few months. I am not in any way linked to SC Design who made Blackbushe (which has worse layout and markings than my free version). We are working on Popham, but no ETA just yet. The Orbx version for FSX/P3D would need starting from scratch to be anywhere near the level of detail we are aiming for.

That's great news Gobby. You've got a buyer here when it comes out.
I'm sure it was you at the end of R21 the other day on Multiplayer. I taxied up in the Spit and you did a kind of bow with the aircraft as if to say "After you". After take off it struck me that you might have been working. If you need any pics/ reference stuff let me know - I'm a Popham regular.

Yay, great news indeed, Gobby!! I'm excited to see what you do with Popham. I'll be waiting with willfly to buy it.

I like this airfield, and am interested to hear you are working on a payware version, but please don't make the same mistake that Burning Blue made with Headcorn.

A few nicely modelled assets, the cafe, the watertower, some fencing and a couple of other tweaks would be great, but at Headcorn they stuffed it so chock full of static aircraft with fire engines parading up and down non-stop, it's like a flipping county fair. It feels over the top and brings my system down to 20fps which for a rural grass strip airfield is ridiculous.

The game doesn't even run smoothly for people with RTX3070s yet so please spare a thought for the rest of us!

There will be no 'jumping' aircraft at Popham when it is released in the coming weeks.

Burning Blue Design have now released Popham. As you can see from this comment being 3 months old, there has been a tonne of work put into it to make it as accurate as possible!

Popham is one of my favourite places to fly from (and to). The circuit patterns for noise abatement make it more interesting than flying standard patterns. A few aircraft in the hangars area at the back would be nice :)

Thanks for the windsock. A very important addition as it allows you to line it up over the white arrow for a perfect arrival on R26 !
The only issues I have are - can the water tower be on a stand as it sits at approx 30' high. And a few hundred yards beyond R26 there are half a dozen tall grain silos which we also use to position for R08 for noise abatement.

+1 vote for those if possible please. The grain silos are used to fly over them on takeoff from R26 as well.
