    Description

01/11/21 I'm aware this scenery needs updated. The scenery will still appear in the sim ok but I know the traffic no longer works and the night lighting no longer works properly. I haven't abondoned it. I'm just waiting for the sim to settle down a bit. I don't want to put a lot of work into fixing it for yet another sim update to break things.

This is my first version of the city of Edinburgh I've been working on this past week. Like all old historic cities that don't have telemetary data flight sim 2020 really doesn't do it justice currently so I thought it would be an obvious choice to bring over from Google maps.

The sceney here is a good chunk of Edinburgh and includes Arthurs Seat, the extinct volcano which Edinburgh surrounds. Sadly it doesn't feature much of Leith or Portobello but I might bring those in as a future project. The scnery was grabbed in very high detail from Google maps as I wanted it to be as photorealistic as possible in the sim. As such its a large file, almost 2GB unpacked, so you may expereince big FPS drops depending on the power of your graphics card.

There are a few known rough edges. I'm still on a big learning curve with the SDK and if I'd known at the start what I know now I would have done things a little differently. Edinburgh is a very hilly city so it was difficult getting the scnery boundery to merge seamlessly with the default scenery. I've hidden the join in most cases but its not as good as it could be. I may re-do it from scratch at somepoint. The main thing is its much, much better than the current in game version of the city.

Interstingly Google must have photographed the city in August during the world famous Edinburgh festival as the festival is clearly visible in various locations. See if you spot them. Also, during the festival Edinburgh castle is lit up in different colours so I've replicated that here too. For some reason the clip distance of the coloured lights isn't great though so you have to get close to the castle to see them. If anyone knows how to sort this please get in touch and I'll update it.

    Enjoy!

The lights have sadly stopped working since one of the last sim updates. I'm going to try to update the scenery soon but I'm just waiting for the sim to settle down a bit. Each time Asobo release an update it seems to break something and there's another sim update due this month.

Cool, I'll b waiting. Thanks for the get-back. Maybe you should wait until after the 17th when they do "The Game of The Year" update.

Thanks. I'm going to update the scenery soon but I'm waiting until things settle down with the sim first. There's a lot of bugs at the moment with the sim and the SDK.

    Hi!

It seems to work already after SU5, BUT the castle seemed to be modified by Asobo. I now miss the arena, it looks different...

And there ist still no traffic in the city. I saw the cars driving beneath your texture. Do you have time to care about it? I still love this city for ever!

Hi there. Yeah I am going to start doing a new version of the Edinburgh scenery. Get it looking a bit better and get the night lighting fixed. Hopefully I'll get it done over the next few weeks.

Awesome , 5 stars. A huge improvement on the MSFS Edinburgh. My only issues are the underground traffic (as mentioned by others) and the trees that look like green potatoes when flying close to the ground. Is there any way to change them with MSFS trees or a better model?

Hi there. Thanks. I do have another version of Edinburgh in the works. Two different versions actually. The first is an update on the existing one with better traffic and night lighting. The other is almost all of Edinburgh divided into two large scenery packs. I'll get the updated version finished first and the larger version finished over the Summer at some point. I've got a couple of other smaller projects I need to finish off first. Cheers.

Did you ever get around to finishing the rest of Edinburgh? This is the best scenery out there on FS, I was so impressed flying around in VR over the city I grew up in. You made that possible. thanks

Hi there. Thanks. Glad you like it. I do currently have an almost finished version of almost all of Edinburgh converted for the sim. The scenery is split into two halves and it stretches all the way from Corstorphine in the West to Portobello in the East. Edinburgh Zoo even has animated animals. It has full night lighting and looks incredible. The only thing that is stopping me releasing it is the fact that its so big and detailed it totally tanks performance. There are ways to optimise it, which is what I'm currently looking into. If I can't optimise it I might just release it all anyway and I guess it might start working a bit better as the sim itself gets better optimised.

Still trying to work out what happened to the artificial ski-slope near the Edinburgh by-pass and why trees suddeny appeared on more or less the same spot. Has anyone/have you any suggestions? I deleted a Trees_Draw_Distance_Choices_gvUtW file from my Community folder but that made no difference and I can see any other addon that might cause a conflict in this area.

I absolutely loved this mod when it was first released, but this mod is no longer fully compatible with the terrain changes and new POI added to Edinburgh in WU3. Will there be plans to update this mod to be compatible with WU3?

It should be compatible. My version is still working ok after WU3. I do have it in mind to make a new larger version of the scenery so I'll maybe get onto that soon.

After a reinstall of your mod, still no artificial ski slope in the Pentlands Hills but part of the area is now obscured by trees so there must be a software conflict somewhere. Not your mod then, Have to think about this...
