Asobo Diamond DA40 TDI Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

This is a modification for the MSFS 2020 default Asobo Diamond DA40 TDI aircraft and is primarily aimed at improving the aircraft flight model to make its overall performance more closely match the actual aircraft, providing a much closer experience to flying the real aircraft.  Multiple changes have been made to the flight model parameters, and the aircraft weight and balance, which are detailed in the included Change Log file found under the Documentation folder.

This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-asobo-aircraft-da40-tdi  folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default Diamond DA40 TDI aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will also continue to utilize all of the existing available Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

The Diamond DA40 TDI is a very stable and easy to fly 4 passenger General Aviation light aircraft that is excellent for flight training or just weekend pleasure flying.  Its turbo charged diesel engine has a modern ECU which takes care of most engine management tasks like the Mixture and Prop pitch, making it very simple to operate while still having impressive low and high altitude performance, which allows it to operate from just about anywhere in the world.  Its relatively slow speed and large wrap around obstruction free bubble canopy also make it ideal for taking in the amazing scenery that MSFS has to offer.  This aircraft and this mod are only for the MSFS Deluxe Edition and Premium Deluxe Edition.

    STEERING:

This mod uses Free Castering Steering by default to match the real aircraft.  To improve the realism and performance of your Toe Brake Pedals, I highly recommend changing the SENSITIVITY settings on the CONTROLS OPTIONS screen to the following...
    ⦁    Set "SENSITIVITY -" to 33%,
    ⦁    Set "SENSITIVITY +" to -33%,
⦁    Set "DEAD ZONE" to 0%,
    ⦁    Set "NEUTRAL" to 60%,
⦁    Set "EXTREMITY DEAD ZONE" to -1%.
This will make the performance of the brakes much closer to the real-world, where the braking force is applied very gradually at first and then increases as the pedal is pressed further down. This will improve the smoothness and realism of braking for all aircraft in MSFS, and it will also make differential brake steering much easier and more precise.

Any chance this will be adapted for msfs2024 as well? It’s my real-life training aircraft but the asobo standard version is just too unrealistic for useful simulator training, especially with regard to engine performance. You can climb out at 2000ft/min and 100kts…

I haven't upgraded 2024 yet, so it won't be anytime soon... if ever.

have you maybe found an alternative? I am also about to start taking lessons on DA40 TDI in real life, and what to have some decent practice on MSFS

@Mgouge425 - Why on Earth would you stay with an old version of MSFS, that was replaced almost 2 years ago? Your otherwise great work will become irrelevant if you don't upgrade to the latest platform. I cannot understand the ultra-conservative people who are living in the past in staying with 2020. It's such an illogical choice. Sure, 2024 was messy on release. 2 years later and it is a vastly improved sim over 2020.

It doesn't work for me either. It's pink and there's no sound. I've installed it in the Community packages folder and I have the most recent version of MSFS 2020. Is there something I'm missing?

Make sure you have the correct version of MSFS that includes this default aircraft. then make sure you installed the correct folder into COMMUNITY as described above.

Thanks for the mod, I never fly the DA40 TDi without it. I notice that cruise now results in a very noticeable nose down attitude in version 1.3. Possibly as much as 10 degrees nose down which doesn't seem realistic, even with the DA40's large wings. I thought the cruise attitude in version 1.2 better as as it was nearly level at the same speeds and seemed a more likely cruise attitude.

Unfortunately, I have not flown this aircraft in real life but based on input from pilots who have flown it and the DA40 NG version, it apparently does have a nose down cruise flight attitude. This is due to the high-lift glider airfoil it uses, which is also why it has an unusual 0-degree wing angle of incidence... I don't know exactly how close the current performance of the aircraft flight model is to the real aircraft, but I am depending on feedback from real-world pilots to let me know if it needs to be adjusted.

Thanks for this feedback... A new release which improves the cruise pitch attitude has now been uploaded.

Hello! I enjoy the mod. Just one additional realism that you may wish to work on. In MSFS the aircraft behaves as though it is constant speed, permanently operating at 2300rpm. This is not, however, how the real aircraft operates. It is constant speed, but there is a mechanical link within the power lever that is used to reduce RPM at the same time as the power (load) is reduced. In other words, in MSFS, if you set 100% power, you'll get 2300rpm. But if you set 75% power, you will STILL get 2300rpm, which is not correct. 2300rpm is used between 95-100% power only. at 90% power, the plane should reduce to 2250rpm. At 80% power it will be 2200rpm, at 75% power it will be 2150rpm and at 70% power (economy cruise) it will be 2100rpm.

Thanks for this feedback... Yes, you are right that engine throttle/RPM behavior is not correctly simulated. Unfortunately, MSFS does not simulate the full functionality of an ECU, so achieving the correct throttle/RPM behavior would require custom code in the aircraft 3-D model and Asobo did not provide this for the default aircraft. I do not have the skills required to modify the 3-D model.

TIP OF THE DAY: To effectively steer an aircraft with a free castering nosewheel like this one, start by applying full rudder in the direction of the desired turn, without applying any brakes. Then, slowly increase the throttle until the aircraft begins to slowly move and turn. After you begin rolling, gently apply partial brakes on one wheel at a time only if needed for a sharper turn and increase power as needed to maintain speed. Maintain a higher taxi speed of 20 -30 knots for straight taxiways and use the rudder to maintain the taxiway centerline. Slow down and apply partial braking on one wheel only if full rudder is insufficient to make a sharper turn. This may seem difficult and awkward at first, but mastering this piloting skill is an essential part of learning to fly this aircraft.

    Hello,

Thanks for your mod, it now flies more the way I remember when I flew it in real life and the new pilot viewpoint position is spot on.

Would you please consider adding CFD? My experience from the default C172 is that it adds even more to the feeling of realism of the flight, especially in bumpy weather.

Thanks... It's great to get some real world pilot feedback to confirm my assumptions about how it should fly!
