Diamond Point (2WA1), WA, US - Image 1

    Description

Diamond Point Airport is a private community airport located on the northeast corner of Miller Peninsula in Clallam County, Washington, 8 mi (13 km) east of Sequim.

Former FS2004 and FSX users might know the airport as it is a classic that was rendered many times in detail and in various simulators.
The airport is a few miles E of W28 Sequim (https://flightsim.to/file/5657/sequim-valley-airport-w28-wa-us) and a short hop accross the Juan de Fuca strait from KFHR Friday Harbor (included in MSFS).

The airport is very interesting and challenging. The runway is quite narrow and induces a false sense of perspective for altitude estimation. Additionally the winds and downdrafts can pose some challenges. Be sure to read carefully the information linked below and follow the procedures for noise abatement.

As a bonus I'm including also a complete overhaul of WA45 Olympic Field (https://www.airnav.com/airport/WA45) which was featured in previous renditions as well. This small and challenging turf airstrip is just a few miles to the S of 2WA1.
I have absolutely no information about this small turf airstrip but I was triggered by the high number of cars parked in the area. The only explanation I have is that there is a cannabis shop nearby at Discovery Bay :)

Be sure to check also my W28 Sequim scenery as it is a few nm away and makes a perfect triangle to practice patterns and touch and goes.

    Hello!

Enjoying 2WA1 scenery as before, but it seems that the windsock is reversed. I'm not sure if this happened because of SU6 or was so before, but it definitely shows the wind direction 180° different from what is set. Here are a couple of screenshots:

    Can you, please, correct this?

2WA1 is a nice enough place to fly from, its simple, but fits in its environment quite well. But the included WA45 is truly appalling. For the full length of the runway is a narrow puddle, I assume for landing float planes, given the docks. There is no way this puddle would exist in real life, in that location, and no way it could be deep enough to land on (it is far too narrow). Remove that absurd puddle and earn back 2 stars.

i am not here to fulfill your requests nor to beg your stars.

the airfield is of course there, simply check airnav and satellite images.

next time you go bashing people’s work at lest try to fact check your claims.

I didn't say the airfield wasn't there. I questioned the viability of docks on the puddle. My apologies for implying you needed my favor or stars. It was only meant as a quip.

wa45 landing or taking off results in crash contact with water, this is happening on the grass strip for me.
    q

that's strange as there are no water polygons in that entire scenery and the implementation is the default one.
probably you clipped the water with a wheel landing a bit offset, the hit and contact points don't work very well in MSFS.

Had no problems landing at WA45 with the Seminole or Savage Cub, as expected and tested many times.

Also crashed clipping the water taking off from south end. Definitely did not deviate from runway center line. Crash occurred maybe 100 yards into takeoff roll. Started at southernmost edge of runway. Landing was fine, but I landed closer to the middle of the runway. Landed to the north. Flying JF Arrow III.

Making a few runs, it appears that if you stray too close to the water, you'll crash. It would appear that the water extends about 5 meters or so beyond the visible edge of the water. If you takeoff and land in the 1/2 of the runway farthest from the water, you'll likely make it, but if you operate on the 1/2 of runway closest to the water, you'll likely crash.

I did love the bear hanging out by the dumpsters...that's realistic! LOL

I'll rate this mod once the water issue gets resolved. It has 5 star potential.

I'll see what can I do, perhaps asobo made some low level change on the API of water exclusion polygons, it's been some time since I visited this place.

    q

I tried to add some water exclusion polygons but they do not work.

They remove the water but the sim still interprets the empty pond as a lower altitude dip.

not much I can do about it other than suggest to not stay close to the water. MSFS is not doing much microsimulation of terrain and features.

Another suggestion is to disable crash detection, collision hitboxes are rubbish anyway and if you crash, you crash, it's not a black screen that adds to the realism.

Very nice work. Captured the atmosphere well.

Thank you, countless hours flying in your rendition gave me the right mood.
I’d like to add more detail but I am not proficient with custom objects modeling.
But the core atmosphere is there indeed.

    Trip down memory lane...

    https://airdailyx.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-visit-to-diamond-point-airport-2wa1.html

I seem to remember that you could open one of the garage/hanger doors by tuning COM2 to a certain frequency.

It would be nice to see some signage in your rendition - which is wonderful thanks.

Thank you very much for your sceneries! They really improve MSFS.
Is there maybe a chance for Port Angeles? It´s very close to Sequim and Diamond Point and it is missing all the airport buildings. Maybe there´s a chance of adding some of them? It would be great :-)

Port Angeles was one of the original airfields in the original Microsoft Flight Simulator, if my memory is correct.
    q

    glad you like it :)
Port Angeles is a bit bigger than what I'm used to, it would be a grind for me.
I still have Forsk S18 to finish and next I'm thinking about Westport as I like that area a lot.
