Description
How can I start writing about Ranger Creek. This airport has a very special place in my flight simulation history and it goes a long way back until Flight Unlimited 3 flying missions for Bush Flying Unlimited.
Inspired by the many stories and articles published by Steve "Bear" Cartwright (if you are reading, hi!) I decided to give it a try at flying small GA aircraft into disperse airstrips in the middle of nowhere and, casually, my first destination ever as a virtual bush pilot was Ranger Creek. I got hooked ever since into GA aircraft, stick and rudder and bush flying operations.
Sorry, enough about my virtual memories as a virtual armchair pilot.
Ranger Creek is a small airport managed by WSDOT (Washington State Department of Transportation, see references) and is located a few miles out of dramatic Mt. Rainier.
It is in reach from many other locations (some detailed by me) and makes for some spectacular mountain flying since it is situated in a narrow clearance between high mountains and tall trees.
Looking at the area with a map it would seem trivial that an approach from the south would be easier but, in fact, approaching from the north is a much safer bet.
As in OR05 Flying M Ranch, it is advisable to have some confidence with side-slips, forward-slips and flying the backside of the power curve. On paper the runway seems long at
arond 2900ft but the reality is that the tall trees at both ends will force you to discard a good portion of the runway.
