KLKP - Lake Placid NY - Image 1

    Description

Lake Placid Airport KLKP, is close to some of the sights, most notably the ski jumps, of the Winter Olympics held here in 1980 and before that in 1932.  So I endeavored to include them, the Olympic Flame and enhanced the running track next to the airport. I also included the Atmospheric Observation station at the top of Whiteface Mountain to the north (tallest peak 6,000).  I added a helipad there, even though one doesn't exist. It is a pretty tricky landing due to the rocks and high winds.  Good luck.  You need to zoom in to see it because it is close to the landmark star.  There is a tetrahedron but since I couldn't get it to work, I removed it.  (sorry)

This airport is the perfect companion to Adirondack KSLK.  A steep approach is required on runway 32.  I stay above 3,000 feet to clear the hills to the east and then keep it slow but within the envelope.  Most often you will require pretty good crosswind landing techniques.

I tested this out in 2024 and it is ok except for the bright lights.  I hope they fix this bug soon. (all city lights etc are much brighter than 2020)

    Have Fun

As a 6th generation Lake Placid/Adirondack resident and aviation professional that started my aviation career at KLKP as a 14 year old working at Adirondack Flying Service, this is a dream come true for me!! After leaving the area to hone my skills and having now recently returned to the area as the Assistant Airport Manager at KSLK, I have dreamed of this day for decades. I have always wanted to approach KLKP and see those majestic ski jumps! Wow! Thank you so much for your hard work in making this a reality for me. Thank you thank you thank you!!

You are very welcome. Yes, the ski jumps were an important part of this airport scenery. The flame doesn't work in 2024 but it does in 2020.
Thanks again for the 5 stars. It always helps. :)

I was an airport rat back in the day at KLKP. You just need to add a couple gliders in the grass on the end of 32 and it will be perfect :D Great job. Thanks.

Thanks.. I went down there but didn't notice any gliders. But it should be no problem to put a few in.

' Love your videos. It is a winter village for sure. I live in Montreal so it is a nice little day trip for me.
I focussed on modeling of the buildings and so for windows ( eg ski jump base) that were not important, I didn't use parallax because it is such a pain to do.

Oh Oh! what a beautiful part of the world this is. I loved doing the research into it. Lookout New Zealand and Canadian Rockies - this is amazing flying country. I would love to visit - but for now I thank Flight Simulator, and so will you. Definitely on the list.

Hay River, now renamed Merlyn Carter Airport, is a major regional link to Canada's North West Territories.  It sits on the delta of the Hay River as it flows into the Great Slave Lake, which was an important waterway for trade. The air terminal is custom created.

Port Hardy is one of the most important airports on Vancouver Island and is home to Wilderness Seaplane which continues to serve the region with a fleet of Gruman Goose'.  It has an ILS with glideslope on Rwy 11 -  dial in 109.5 for the localizer and glideslope.  It has a new terminal building in which the roof resembles the cross section of a wing.   I spent some wonderful days up in that area at Telegraph Cove - 40 miles south, but have been a fan of this wild and beautiful part of Canada for years. See the artwork of Emily Carr for instance. I wanted to incorportate some of the artwork of the coastal indigineous peoples -Kwakiutl First Nations -so I included them as highlighted in the terminal building.  (dugout canoe and exterior facade)
