Grimsby Dock Tower - Image 1

    Description

Grimsby Dock Tower is a hydraulic accumulator tower and a maritime landmark at the entrance to the Royal Dock, Grimsby, in North East Lincolnshire, England. It was completed on 27 March 1852, based on William Armstrong's idea of the hydraulic accumulator, with the purpose of containing a 30,000-imperial-gallon (140,000 L) reservoir at a height of 200 feet (61 m), that was used to provide hydraulic power to power the machinery of the Grimsby Docks. The extreme height of the tower was necessary to achieve sufficient pressure, and as a result of this, the tower can be seen for several miles around, even far inland on the north bank of the River Humber and is a great reference for VFR flight.

This scenery also includes the smaller weighted accumulator tower.

There will be more updates to include modelling of the surrounding dock area if the requirement arises :)

This works very nicely with our other scenery in the region which are available here:
    Spurn Point Landmarks
    EGNJ Humberside Airport
    EGNY Linley Hill Airfield

    You're welcome Mate,

I had both sides of the dock modelled earlier but being mostly empty concrete now, it looked terrible when getting close. Only the jetties remain for now. Main thing I spotted when testing Humberside was that the tower would pop up only when you were about to hit it. Should be visible from long range now. The low detail model only had six vertices, I think the sim thought it to be insignificant to render. No idea really, made it more complex and its visible now. Reverse LOD LOL

I get the same effect on Spurn point lighthouse, might be worth looking at that as well?

    Hi Mate,

Confirmed, seems to only appear around 3.7NM. I'll take a look at it. Currently working on a big tower and it's literally giving me vertigo!

Lindsey Oil Refinery Chimneys would be a simple start for VFR in the area ?

Yes POI would be great any chance you could maybe put some silos and cranes around Immingham docks as that's where I have worked in the past and also the approach into Humberside takes you over the docks. Thank you so much for creating stuff round here I thought it would be ages before we got anything, I was surprised to see the Humber Bridge in the last update to be fair :D

Hi Chris, it's really great to see local landmarks being posted, pity Titans chimney was demolished, it was a great landmark/guidance piece also.
May I ask if EGNJ might be in the pipeline, it's not far from the bridge...

    Hi Mate,

Yes Humberside is in the pipeline, I wasn't able to get enough reference material until a breakthrough over the weekend. I usually fly into there when I'm testing, the new terminal is a bit of a shocker!. I'm on another EGN airfield at the moment to keep the north bank happy ;) That should be released this week some time.

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the comments and support. Just a quick question:

Do you want the Tower to have a POI marker?

I don't like them myself so I've been avoiding adding too many in the same location, but I'm not you.

    Fly safe!

Yes it would be helpful, especially for those of us unfamiliar with the area.
