    KRDG - Reading Regional Airport - V2 - Image 1

    Description

Reading Regional Airport is located in southeastern Pennsylvania about 50 miles (80km) northwest of Philadelphia, serving the city of Reading and surrounding communities. The field is named for famed World War II general Carl Spaatz.

    History:
The airport was opened in 1939 and regular airline service began in 1941 when TWA started daily service. From 1943 to 1946 the field was used by the military as Reading Army Air Base.

In 1946 airline service returned with TWA setting up a flight school for training international crews and Colonial Airlines began regular service to Washington and Montreal.

In the 1950 Reading Air Service started aircraft maintenance meetings at the airport which grew into the world-renowned Reading Air Show. At its peak in the 1970s the show was second only to the Paris Air Show in size. The airshow was discontinued in the early 1980s.

    Today:
Reading Regional no longer has regular airline service (although it does maintain a terminal for charters). It is however an active general aviation hub. The Mid Atlantic Air Museum is located at the north end of the field and is a must-see for fans of vintage military and civilian aircraft. Every June the museum hosts its popular World War II weekend hosting aircraft from all over the country.

This version is a MSFS2024 native rebuild of my original aiport for MSFS2020. Due to changes in the SDK, it was not possible to make the older scenery compatible. This gave me the opportunity to improve on the original.

    • Corrected terrain.
    • Rebuilt scenery with new LOD levels.
    • Updated lighting for MSFS2024.
    • Added custom runway and taxiway surfaces.
    • Custom taxiway light placement.
    • Custom placement of taxiway markings and signs.
    • Corrected Runway elevations.
    • Relocated PAPI lights to correct location.
    • Added custom windsocks (solid red instead of red and white stripes).
    • Removed dependencies from third party libraries. Static aircraft are Asobo Simobjects.
    • The satellite imagery in the current version of MSFS was recorded during the Mid Atlantic Air Museum's annual World War II Weekend. As a result there were hundreds of cars, aircraft, people, and temporary structures that don't exist any other time. This was covered over with more appropriate grass and pavement.

Note: The Mid Atlantic Air Museum ramp is populated by some Asobo models with the exception of the R4-D (U.S. Navy C-47). I am working on adding some of the other planes in future updates (the R4-D has a few missing textures. Should be fixed soon).

Great job! I'm a WWII reenactor, and I've participated in the World War II weekend for many years. I could find the spot where we set up our encampment every year - or thereabouts. It looks very different without all of the tents set-up! :)

Does it have the same dependencies as the 2020 version?

No dependencies at all other than standard Asobo objects. One of my goals was to get away from third party libraries. Several custom objects (fencing, ASR9 radar, windsocks) were built to accomplish this.

Very well done. I had your 2020 KRDG but was anxious to get the 2024 version. This looks great!
Now, would you be interested in building my "home" airport, also here in PA? It's N68 Franklin County Regional (formerly Chambersburg Municipal). I can send photos of the current buildings. Thanks.

Ooops. Sorry. Just asked this again in the KLNS comments. I'm forgetful.
