    Understanding Category and Affiliation Selections

Understand how categories and affiliations work before you upload content.

When uploading an addon, you'll be asked to choose a Category and an Affiliation. Getting these right ensures your addon is discoverable and appears in the correct browse sections.

    Category

The Category defines what type of addon you're uploading. Examples include Aircraft, Liveries, Airports, Scenery, Utilities, and more. Each category has its own browse page and may contain subcategories for further classification (e.g., Airports Helipads).

    Tips:

    • Choose the category that best describes the primary function of your addon.
    • If your addon touches multiple areas (e.g., a scenery pack that includes an airport), pick the most prominent one.
    • The category determines which browse page your addon appears on (e.g., /airports, /scenery).

    Affiliation

The Affiliation defines which base product or platform your addon is associated with — for example, a specific aircraft model like "Boeing 737-800" or "Fenix A320". Think of it as answering the question: "What does the user need to already own to use this addon"? Affiliations work across categories. A "PMDG 737" affiliation page will show liveries, soundpacks, cockpit mods, and utilities — anything tied to that aircraft, regardless of category.

    Tips:

    • Select the affiliation that matches the base product your addon requires or enhances.
    • If your addon is standalone and doesn't require a specific third-party product, you may not need an affiliation.
    • Users frequently browse by affiliation to find everything compatible with their favorite aircraft — a correct affiliation significantly boosts your addon's visibility.

    Common Mistakes

    • Choosing the wrong category because the addon relates to aircraft but is actually a utility (e.g., a fuel calculator should be in Utilities, not Aircraft).
    • Skipping the affiliation when your addon clearly targets a specific product — this makes it invisible on affiliation browse pages.
