Nulato Airport (PANU) - Image 1

    Description

Nulato Iditarod Checkpoint #15.  Also is Yukon River Airports in Alaska # 13.

The village of Nulato (nu-LAU-toe) is situated on the mighty Yukon 52 miles down river from Galena.  Well before the town was incorporated in 1963, Athabascans from the interior and Eskimos from the coast met at Nulato for trading.  After the Russian explorer Malakov arrived in the 1830, an actual trading post was built.  The trading post was burned to the ground twice over trade disputes. The post office opened in 1897.  At the peak of the gold rush, there were 46 steamers that navigated the Yukon. When the river was ice free, a couple of ships each day would stop at Nulato to purchase wood to fire their boilers.   The gold was depleted by 1906 and the miners moved on but the Athabascans and missionaries who called Nulato “home” stayed.

Nulato Airport (ICAO: PANU, FAA LID: NUL) is a state-owned public-use airport located one nautical mile (2 km) northeast of the central business district of Nulato, a city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. It has approx. 3,500 flight operations per year, and is serviced by Everts Air and Wright Air Service.

    Location:       64.729333, -158.074222
    Dimensions: 4,000 by 100 feet (1,219 x 30 m).
    Surface:        Gravel
    Runway:       02 / 20

I’ve included a link to a short video, Wings of the Iditarod that features the Iditarod Airforce.

In order to replicate Iditarod conditions, I recommend setting your Weather parameters to Month = March.  Snow Depth = 29”.  Temperature = 0 degrees.

    Installation:
Copy the airport folder inside of the Zip file into your MSFS Community folder.

This airport was created using Standard Asobo/Microsoft libraries found in the sim.  I also used the FREE “UK2000 Common Objects Library”, and the FREE “Emerald Objects Library” found in the sim Market Place.  If you have not previously installed these libraries in your Community folder, some objects may not be visible in your sim.  Remember, you only must install these one time.  All Microsoft World Updates should be installed also.

There is an Easter Egg installed.

    * Special thanks to Willowfsx for creating this Iditarod livery!

Thanks for checking. This airport and surrounding area was another elevation / mesh nightmare. After countless hours of adjusting and tweaking, I had to settle for this. PANU will be another MSFS 2024 rewrite from scratch.

Loading this in 2024 seems to result in another terrain error. The hills are flattened and the floodplain raised in a rectangle around PANU. You may want to look into this.

Your Iditarod series of air strips are fantastic, I've downloaded them all but only made it to four of them so far. How Alaska bush pilots deal with the weather up there is beyond me, the icing taking place this time of the year is horrendous. I have to ask a question, where did you get that *AWESOME* aged & well used DHC-2 cockpit panel re-paint? It's absolutely EPIC!

Keep up the great work with your airstrips, thanks to yourself and others Alaska is is becoming very well represented in MSFS.

Thanks for the kind words. Today is the first Sunday in March. The official start of the Iditarod race is today in Willow (PAUO). A great time to fly along as part of the Iditarod Air Force. See you in Nome in 10 days!

Thank you so much for this great tour. I would like to make an inspection flight along the route before the race will begin. But the last two days that terrible icing keep me grounded. Should I just turn it off in the flightsim?

I have completed the 24 checkpoints in both winter and summer. The race is always run in March, so there should be snow on the ground. However, it's good practice to just run it when conditions are good. -Enjoy!

Ruby - Population 187 -- Gold was discovered here in 1907, but no town was established until 1911 when additional gold deposits were discovered on Long Creek, causing a rush of prospectors to the area.  Ruby was home for many of the mushers who carried mail for the Northern Commercial Company from Tanana to Ruby. The trip took four days and paid $5.00 a day. Dog team mail ended here in 1931. The checkpoint is in town, at the community hall.
