Alakanuk Airstrip (PAUK) - Image 1

    Description

Alakanuk Airport is the 2nd of the 24 airstrips and airports on the Yukon River in Alaska.

Alakanuk: population 700, is a small village located in the Kusilvak Census Area of western Alaska. The name "Alakanuk" means "wrong way" or "mistake village" in Yup'ik, reflecting its location in a maze of watercourses. The village is situated at the east entrance of Alakanuk Pass, a major southern channel of the Yukon River, about 15 miles from the Bering Sea. It is part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. The village has a subarctic climate with heavy snowfall and strong winds during the fall and winter. When the ice breaks, barges bring much needed supplies to the village.

The new Alakanuk Airport, which opened in 2012, replaced the older one for several reasons:
The new airport was designed to improve the safety of airport maintenance and operations.
It can also accommodate larger aircraft, which allows for more efficient fuel and freight deliveries. This is particularly important for the transportation of fish products from the village to market.  The new airport includes a longer and wider runway, which enhances its capacity and functionality.

    Dimensions: 4000 x 75 feet (1200 x 25 meters)
    Surface:        Gravel
    Runway:       16 / 34

    Installation:
MS/Asobo mistakenly created 2 airports for Alakanuk.  AUK is the duplicate, PAUK is the good one.  In order to fix this, I had to modify both airports.  Both mods must be added to your community folder.  This download should handle that for you but verify that both AUK and PAUK are in your Community folder.

This airport was created using the standard MS / Asobo libraries and free libraries from the Marketplace.  In order to view all the scenery objects, make sure you have installed the latest System and World Updates. Also go to the MS/Asobo Marketplace to download and install the following free libraries: UK2000 Common Library, and the free ESD Object Library.

Thanks for adding Alukanuk, great to see the place again only this time no mosquitos! I have Pauk but not Auk, do I need it? The game is putting me on a closed, paved runway with no sign of the gravel one.

Version 1.0.3 fixes the link to the old CLOSED airport. Please re-download and fly PAUK again. AUK should not even be listed on the World Map. Thanks!

Hi Tom thanks for the response, glad I finally got the chance to try it! Place seems to have changed a bit since I was there back in the 90s. Used to be just a little gravel strip with lotsa mosquitoes.

    Ruby Airport (PARY)

Ruby - Population 187 -- Gold was discovered here in 1907, but no town was established until 1911 when additional gold deposits were discovered on Long Creek, causing a rush of prospectors to the area.  Ruby was home for many of the mushers who carried mail for the Northern Commercial Company from Tanana to Ruby. The trip took four days and paid $5.00 a day. Dog team mail ended here in 1931. The checkpoint is in town, at the community hall.
